I got some good research but want to know from people with experience, with addiction them self, family members or friends. It can include the effects it had on their body, their family, their life. Ten points to best answer and a huge thank you to those who share their stories.

I had an addiction to pain killers that were prescribed to me by a pain clinic for back pain. I was addicted to hydrocodone and was addicted for about a year. I had no idea I was even addicted but I started taking the required dose, then I would stack the pills, taking more than prescribed. Eventually I ran out and had physical withdrawals such as intense pain in my back but it was the pain of not actually having the pill or the high. I would find myself back at the hospital trying to get more pills when I ran out and then I knew I had a problem, disclosed it to my doctor and parents and it was hell. I had to be hospitalized due to a bad withdrawal episode. I was lightheaded, foaming at the mouth, I felt like I was going to die. Once I was released from the hospital and the drug was out of my system, I still had withdrawals such as fever, chills, sweats, constipation, insomnia, extreme moodiness and depression. I felt like it was the end of the world. I admitted myself into a detox program for one day with a dose of suboxen and that stuff was so nasty. It felt like a rollercoaster where your body just went into cycles of fits where you would vomit or have diarrhea. I left after one day and returned home and went cold turkey and ended up having surgery for my back and feel 100% better now. Addiction is very hard to recognize and tough to get through, but it is all mental and requires reprogramming your brain to try and divert your triggers or temptations into something else. Addiction is also hereditary and runs in my family. You can take the drug out of the body but not always the brain. I would say the mental effects were far more devastating than the physical symptoms.
