Does Anybody Out There Know for Certain Which Medications Will Cause False Positive UA Results?

Question by cditutor: Does anybody out there know for certain which medications will cause false positive UA results?
I have heard so many BS stories about how certain medications will make you come up positive for certain illegal substances on a UA drug scan. Does anybody out there know for certain? If so, which meds and for what substance will they show a false positive for?

I don’t have a definite answer for you, but about 8 years ago, I was taking Depakote to prevent migraines and effexor for depression. I took a urine drug screen for work, and it came back positive for amphetamines and PCP! My employer sent me for a blood test, and that came back negative. I am no longer on any medications, but needless to say, I am terrified every time I have had to take a drug test since then (I have never had another false positive result). The best thing I can recomend is to ask for a blood test if you have a positive urine test if you have not been taking any drugs. It is more specific, and will detect metabolites of the actual medications you have taken, not just a general class.

There is a huge number of drugs that will cause false positives

According to a report by the Los Angeles Times New Service, a study of 161 prescription and over the counter medications showed that 65 of them produced false positive results in the most widely administered urine test. Ronald Siegel, a pharmacologist at UCLA said ‘The widespread testing and reliance on tell-tale traces of drugs in the urine is simply a panic reaction invoked because the normal techniques for controlling drug use haven’t worked very well. The next epidemic will be testing abuse.”
